Chemical Name: BIPERIDEN (bye-PER-i-den)

Common uses
Akineton is an anticholinergic agent used to treat Parkinson's disease. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your physician.

Prior to Use
Be aware that pre-existing medical conditions, or taking additional medications could interfere with the effectiveness of this one. Let your physician or pharmacist know about any other medications -- prescription or over-the-counter -- that you are using. If you are taking any of the following, your dose or condition may need regular supervision: medicine used to treat mood or emotional disorders (phenothiazines), amantadine, or digoxin. Inform your physician of any other medical conditions including glaucoma, irregular heartbeat, urinating problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your physician or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Akineton.

Instructions for Use
Follow your physician's instructions for taking Akineton. Take Akineton with meals or after finishing meals. It is best to keep Akineton away from heat and light, at room temperature. Should you skip or forget a dose of Akineton, begin using it immediately. If it is within 2 hours of your next dose, omit the skipped dose and continue to follow your original dosing schedule. Never take more than one dose at the same time.

Warnings
It may take several weeks for Akineton to work. Do not stop taking Akineton without first discussing with your physician. Akineton may cause blurred vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Akineton. Akineton may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness. Do not become overheated in hot weather or during exercise or other activities since heatstroke may occur. Before you begin taking any new medicine either prescription or over-the-counter, consult your pharmacist or physician . Women, if you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your physician the benefits and risks of using Akineton during pregnancy. The effects of Akineton on breast milk is not known. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Akineton, consult your pharmacist or physician to discuss the risks to your baby.

Potential Side Effects
Side effects, that may go away during treatment, include dry mouth, headache, nausea, constipation, stomach upset, dizziness, lightheadedness, loss of appetite, nervousness, sleeplessness, drowsiness, trembling of the hands, increased sensitivity of eyes to light, or blurred vision. Consult your physician if they do not go away or if they bring you difficulties. Consult your physician immediately if you experience a fast or pounding heartbeat, chest pain, confusion, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, difficult or painful urination, uncontrolled movements, eye pain, rash, mood or mental changes. Let your physician, pharmacist, or nurse know if you experience any side-effects not listed here.

Drug interactions
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job.

In Case of Overdose
Contact a poison control center or visit an emergency room immediately, if you think you have overdosed. Indications of an overdose are dilated pupils; hot, dry, flushed skin; fast heart rate; fast breathing; and high blood pressure.

Additional information
Do not let anyone else use Akineton. Do not take Akineton to treat health conditions other than what it was prescribed for. Store this and all medication away from the reach of children. If using Akineton for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
