Common uses
Ambenyl is an antihistamine and narcotic cough suppressant combination used to temporarily treat cough and relieve runny nose, sneezing, or watery eyes due to colds, allergies, or flu. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your physician.

Prior to Use
Be aware that pre-existing medical conditions, or taking additional medications could interfere with the effectiveness of this one. Let your physician or pharmacist know about any other medications -- prescription or over-the-counter -- that you are using. If you are taking any of the following, do not use Ambenyl: quinidine. Inform your physician of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your physician or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Ambenyl.

Instructions for Use
Follow your physician's instructions for taking Ambenyl or on the package. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Store Ambenyl at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. If you miss a dose of Ambenyl and you are taking it regularly, begin using it immediately. If it is almost time for your next dose, omit the skipped dose and continue to follow your original dosing schedule. Never take more than one dose at the same time.

Warnings
If your cough continues for more than 7 days, or if you develop a high fever or persistent headache, check with your physician. Do not use Ambenyl if you have had a severe allergic reaction to codeine, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine, or oxycodone (such as Tylox, Tylenol with Codeine, Vicodin). A severe allergic reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to Ambenyl or if a certain medicine contains codeine, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine, or oxycodone, contact your physician or pharmacist. Using Ambenyl alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Ambenyl. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, consult your pharmacist or physician .

Consult your physician if they do not go away or if they bring you difficulties. Contact your physician as soon as possible if you experience rapid or pounding heartbeat, difficulty urinating, flushing, or redness of face. An allergic reaction to Ambenyl is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other side effects not listed above, contact your physician, nurse, or pharmacist.

Drug interactions
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job.
