Common uses
Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.
Prior to Use
Be aware that pre-existing medical conditions, or taking additional medications could interfere with the
effectiveness of this one. Let your physician or pharmacist know about any other medications -- prescription or over-the-counter -- that you are using. If you are taking any of the following, do not use Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate: probenecid, or live vaccines. If you are taking any of the following, your dose or condition may need regular supervision: birth control pills, anticoagulants, allopurinol, methotrexate, tetracycline antibiotics, or injectable aminoglycosides. Inform your physician of any other medical conditions including liver disease, blood disorders (e.g., clotting or bleeding problems), other infections (e.g., mononucleosis), allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. You should not take Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate if you have a history of cholestatic jaundice or liver condition from taking Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate in the past. If you have questions or concerns about Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate, be sure to let your physician or pharmacist know.
Instructions for Use
Follow your physician's instructions for taking Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate. Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate may be taken with food or on an empty stomach. However, for better absorption of Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate and to prevent upset stomach, Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate is best taken with food. Keep Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate in the original container, with the lid tightly closed. It is best to keep Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate away from heat and light, at room temperature. In order to completely clear up your infection, continue taking Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days. Make sure that you do not skip a dose of Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate. Should you skip or forget a dose of Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate, begin using it immediately. If it is almost time for your next dose, omit the skipped dose and continue to follow your original dosing schedule. Never take more than one dose at the same time.
Warnings
Do not use Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a penicillin antibiotic (such as amoxicillin, ampicillin) or a cephalosporin antibiotic (such as Ceclor, Keflex, Ceftin, Duricef). A severe reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you experience difficulty breathing or tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or develop a rash or hives, tell your physician immediately. Do not use any more of Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate unless your physician tells you to do so. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate, contact your physician or pharmacist. Should you experience moderate to severe diarrhea either while taking or after
you have stopped taking Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate, consult your pharmacist or physician . Do not treat it with non-prescription (over-the-counter) medicines. Use of Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush, or a new yeast infection (e.g., oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your physician if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms. Caution is advised when using Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. For women taking birth control pills, Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pill. To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control. Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate is excreted in breast milk if you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate, consult your pharmacist or physician to discuss the risks to your baby. If you have diabetes mellitus, Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate may cause false test results with some urine glucose tests. Check with your physician before you adjust the dose of your diabetes medicine or change your diet.
Potential Side Effects
Side effects that could disappear while taking Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, or mild diarrhea. Consult your physician if they do not go away or if they bring you difficulties. Contact your physician as soon as possible if you experience white patches on the tongue, or vaginal discomfort/itching or discharge. Contact your physician immediately if you experience easy bruising or bleeding, unusual decrease in the amount of urine, dark urine, severe stomach pain, yellow eyes or skin, or severe or bloody diarrhea. An allergic reaction to Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. Let your physician, pharmacist, or nurse know if you experience any side-effects not listed here.
Drug interactions
Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job.
In Case of Overdose
Contact a poison control center or visit an emergency room immediately, if you think you have overdosed. Indications of an overdose are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Additional information
If your symptoms do not improve within a few days and consult your physician if they worsen. Do not let anyone else use Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate. Do not take Amoxicillin-Pot Clavulanate to treat health conditions other than what it was prescribed for. Store this and all medication away from the reach of children and pets.
